Soy sauce

Soy sauce is a salty, umami-rich liquid condiment made from fermented soybeans,  a pantry must-have in plant-based savory cooking.

  • Origin: China (over 2,000 years ago)
  • Cuisine: Asian (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Southeast Asian), Fusion
  • Pairings: garlic, ginger, lime, maple syrup, sesame oil, tofu
  • Common Uses: stir-fries, noodle bowls, dipping sauces, marinades, glazes

Nutrition & Benefits
Soy sauce is naturally rich in umami, which enhances savory flavors and adds depth to vegan dishes without animal products. While high in sodium, low-sodium versions are widely available. It contains trace amounts of protein, iron, and antioxidants from fermentation. Also available in gluten-free tamari and coconut aminos alternatives.
